Santa Clara Valley ACLU Digital Photo Contest 2008-2009

You are invited to take part in the “Window to Civil Liberty Digital Photography Contest, in celebration of our Civil Liberties. Express your enthusiasm for what you see in your community. All that is necessary is a keen eye and a camera!

Any High School student in Santa Clara County communities: Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Gatos, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, San Jose, Santa Clara, Saratoga, and Sunnyvale are welcome to enter. Submissions will be accepted from October 1, 2008 to February 29th, 2009. The photo contest will be comprised of 2 topics Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Expression   Three winning photographs from each category will be showcased on the website: acluscv.org photo contest page 

 Window to Civil Liberty Photo Contest Rules  

Photography TOPIC: Freedom of Speech or Freedom of Expression

Who may enter:

  • Any High School student in Santa Clara County communities: Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Gatos, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, San Jose, Santa Clara, Saratoga, and Sunnyvale, please check your address.   
  • Amateur/student photographers only. An amateur photographer is defined as someone who earns less than 50% of their income from photography and is a high school student        

 Three divisions:

  • 1 Division: Entrants who are 1 7-18 years or older.
  • 2 Division: Entrants who are 15- 16 years of age
  • 3 Division: Entrants who are 13- 14 years of age or younger

What to submit:

  • Only digital photographs may be submitted, winning images will be displayed online. Up to two images per entrant are accepted.
  • All entries must be mailed and sent to acluscv.org photo contest by 11:59 PM PST on February 29th, 2009.
               
  • Entries must be saved as jpeg (.jpg) files. In the following format: Resolution (size) is a minimum of 768 X 1024 and a maximum of 1050 X 1400 at a resolution of 300 pixels/inch. The Digital Competition Files PDF file includes information on sizing digital images for competition.
  • With your CD  submission, include the following information:
    Last name_first name_school, age  category1
    (for second  entry, change the last digit to 2  respectively)
    For example: smith_john_ Los Gatos _1
  • In the mail subject line, indicate the division you are entering.
    For example:  14 year old  
  • All Entries must be on a CD.
  • Your Name, Address, Phone Number, Description of photo(s), Where the photograph(s) was/were taken (place and city)
  • Submissions must be in color; no black and white, sepia, or other monotones
  •  
  • Deadline for entry: CDs must be given to the Digital Committee on time. No email submissions. No submissions will be accepted after the deadline.
  • The top surface of the CD must have the Image Maker’s Name, Telephone Number, and Competition Date.
  • The File Names in the CD must be changed to the following format for each image: Category-Title. E.g- CB- My Color Image. CB is for Color B and “My Color Image” is your Title. Use your appropriate Category & Title.
  • The CD should be placed in the entry CD envelope  
  • The Digital Image Submission Form must be completed in full on the back of the envelope, listing the Topic & File Name for each image.
  • Photographs must not have digital camera time/date stamps or decorative borders.
  • Watermarks are prohibited.

Winning photos will be featured on

  •  Website; images will be credited.
  • Winners will receive $ (see prize page). 
  • Winning photos will be displayed at the  Don Edwards Civil Liberties Award /Annual Meeting  on  April , 2009  
  • Winners will need to send a copy for posting (see format)
  • Winners will be notified by email address or by telephone.

By entering this contest, you affirm that your entries are your own original work. You also irrevocably grant to the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the ACLU   the right to use the photographs for any purpose on the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the ACLU website.  The Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the ACLU will seek permission from entrants prior to the use of images within print or video media. You also agree to hold the office of Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the ACLU harmless in case of any disputes, claims, actions, proceedings, and liabilities.  If the photograph is of a person(s), the photographer affirms the person(s) photographed has(have) given their permission to be included in the photograph and for the photograph to be displayed on  Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the ACLU  website without any fee or other form of compensation and, further, provide written proof of such consent. Any images deemed inappropriate for public viewing will be disqualified.
